Web Design Inspiration

Although working with a client more often than not, confines us to design for their individual needs, requirements and target audience; thus sometimes limiting our desire to be push the envelope in creativity, I still like to follow Great Designs and Artist Communities and Artist's Websites, for unique and fresh perspectives.

The first group I'll list are some great blogs with numerous examples of outstanding web designs.

The second group is more artistic and all Flash, which we know is not SEO friendly, but they still stand out head & shoulders among the rest for thinking outside of the traditional box, having original & engaging perspectives and great user interactivity components.

Embroidered Barn Owl by Ruth Norbury (formerly Ruth Burbery)

I came across this piece that she did on deviantArt.com. I find it so unique.
This is not your average, every day embroidery but more of a unique personal touch
on an old tradition.

Ruth is an artist working primarily in fine hand embroidery, textiles and mixed media. She uses her art to raise awareness of animal suffering and environmental destruction. Ruth is very interested in environmental issues and does not use animal based fibres in her work. She is an active member of the Swansea Animal Rights Group. I located her website and her Twitter where you can follow her works.

I added the "Water Life" site to my Links page today - what a fantastic job and effort. Especially in lieu of the fact that this is to simply bring focus to a very important issue on the health and future of our planet and resources.

I admire their dedication to the design, their attention to the smallest of details as well as the technical expertise involved in such a project. Kudos!

Web Designers Beware! Work for Free Employment "Opportunities"

I wasn't going to utilize this blog as a place to rant, but I sincerely feel the need in this instance.

I just keep seeing this same thing over and over, in several different fashions, on far too many job boards and I don't get it.

Employment "opportunities" that go to great lengths to describe essentially the same story. They are having hard times and struggling but they want to promote their company and they want someone who has the skills and experience to develop for the web, to do it for free, or some half assed promise of "shares in the company", encumbent upon if the company does well of course ... and after the web work has been delivered.

Even with a promise of "shares in the company" - are they prepared to have legal documents prepared to make a proven confirmation of such a promise? Or legally bind themselves to an actual percentage of equity? That, is never written into the ad.

In the days when a company's presence depended more heavily on print media advertising, bulk mail, costly ads in the yellow pages, commercials etc ... would you be able to ask any of those industries, if they would provide service to promote your company - while you are "suffering through hard times and don't have significant upfront money"?

I'm perplexed at knowing in the current climate, when the web is growing to be one of the most important tools for advertising and so much of it is already available for free with the right knowledge, why so many people feel so comfortable to be actively advertising that they are looking for professional work sans compensation.

It's rather insulting and frankly mind boggling, how anyone operating a real business, could propose that some other sad soul struggling along in the web development field, should provide their years of experience and hard work, to promote your project, for free. Don't they need to eat? Do you go to the doctor and tell him you're sick but you can't pay and expect him to see you? Do you ask 5 home builders, to build you a room and be the "winner of the contest", before you select who will build your house? Or you may just take the best room design and have your buddy build it. Hey! Thanks for the idea!

This is blatantly taking advantage of people and the reason it is cause for being flagged on most job boards.

If you want to shine above the competition, you need to invest in your company. If you don't, then you don't.

The 2 old sayings ... "you get what you pay for" and "you need to spend money, to make money" are still true.

I've invested enormous amounts of time and effort and money into my profession and if I were to "work for free" to help a brother out - I'd do so for a NOT FOR PROFIT organization that is also trying to contribute and give back to the community.

If I can help out any newbies on the block, regarding these kinds of positions, I will say this.

If we are to be respected as professional individuals as well as normal human beings, we all have to stand by some semblance of professional protocol, and speak out on blatant abuses.

It may be necessary to take on work in the initial stages of building "any" business presence, for less than what it would normally cost, in order to build your portfolio of work, with the intent of building on it and ultimately, your career.

But if you really are going to work for free, then by all means do so, for not-for-profit organizations - that work hard to give back to the community.

Let those who want to make their million on the back of some poor schmuck, keep digging, while their competition invests in their company and starts to generate a ROI.

My Website To-Do List

My website is still a work in progress. I have several things to do, before I could consider it complete. Most of it has to do with writing, which honestly, I haven't had much time to get to yet. It will always be growing though, as I plan to add to my current portfolio with new work, as finished projects become available.

Additionally, I am always learning and expanding on my current skill set, so as I learn new technologies and new applications, I will most likely provide examples on this site as reference.

Social Media Marketing has currently been my central focus, expanding on my base knowledge of designing for the Internet; optimal and approved World Wide Web Consortium practices, SEO in Web Design planning, and Web designs that truly perform.

I've still got more studying to do on CSS and currently utilizing it just for styles. Re-learning layout technology is somewhat daunting, but ultimately necessary, though I'm confident I have enough understanding of it, to still design for its use.

Fortunately, DHTML isn't going anywhere anytime soon so I'm fairly relaxed about the CSS area of study, and picking it up as I go along, much as I did 16 years ago, when I first began to learn HTML before there were WYSIWYG editors. Additionally, I am always concerned with Cross Browser compatibility and I always test my work on the 3 major browsers. I see an awful lot of issues on sites where CSS is the development method and I would not utilize it until I was confident that my coding was spot on. (In fact, I see a lot of errors on html sites as well! Me and my red pen!)

Last thing on my plate is Blender 2.5. I had a thorough understanding of my previous 3D tool and still have it, however it is not Windows 7 compatible and I would be juggling work between machines, so this is another item on my To-Do list.

I will do it. It's just a matter of time ;-)
